Looking for a job
The Look for Jobs section provides links to local employers’ recruitment pages where you can find details of the latest job opportunities.
Other places to search for a job include local newspapers (most will have a weekly jobs supplement), your local Job Centre, and recruitment websites.
If you want to work in a specific place, such as a bar, shop or hotel, it may also be worth visiting the place in person to enquire whether they have any job opportunities.
Writing a CV
Although in most cases you will be asked to complete an application form when applying for a specific job, some organisations still ask for your Curriculum Vitae (CV). It is useful to produce your CV in advance and update it on a regular basis.
Your CV should preferably be no more than 2 pages and include:
Personal details
include address, email and telephone number
Education
include the name of the school, college or university, the town and the dates attended. Include the subjects studied and the qualifications achieved. Your most recent educational achievement should appear at the top of the list.
Experience
include all work experience whether paid, voluntary or shadowing. This should be in reverse chronological order (most recent first) with rough dates to illustrate how long you were there. Focus on your responsibilities, achievements in the role and the skills used or developed.
Positions of responsibility / achievements / interests
focus upon recent achievements and what your contributions were, the skills you developed and the outcomes. Examples could include belonging to a sports team, winning an award or doing something for charity.
Referees
two referees are the norm. These should be work related. However, if you have just finished school or university, one can be academic. You should provide the referees phone number and e-mail address, along with their title and full contact address (always ask their permission first).
Covering letters
If you are applying for a particular job you should always accompany your CV with a covering letter that explains why you want the job and why you think that you are a suitable candidate. The covering letter should be no longer than one or two sides of A4. In the letter you should:
- State what position you are applying for and where you saw it advertised.
- Explain why you are interested in this type of work, demonstrating an understanding of what it is likely to involve (you should read the application pack in detail to get an understanding of this).
- Explain why you are interested in working for the particular organisation.
- Highlight how you are suitable for this position. Provide evidence of your key strengths by referring to experiences in your CV. These key strengths should be related back to the job you are applying for.
Application forms
A lot of employers nowadays ask applicants to complete a standard application form when applying for a job. These can be filled out by hand or often on-line.
- You will be asked to state your personal details, education, work experience and achievements.
- You will also be asked to demonstrate your suitability for the job.
- You should ensure you provide information on the skills and experience you can bring to the job and why you are attracted to the role.
- You should ensure your response is tailored to the skills and experience required for the particular job you are applying for.
